Some of the most significant discoveries of both this and the last century are associated with research carried out in Bristol, reflecting the faculty’s strong international profile and our outstanding portfolio of people and facilities.

Recent evidence for this is the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 outcome, which ranks the Faculty of Science third nationally after Cambridge and Imperial College, and internationally, THES 2014/15 places Bristol’s Physical Sciences 43rd worldwide.

Within the faculty, the strength (i.e. national rankings) of individual schools is reflected by outstanding REF 2014 results: Geography (1st), Earth Sciences (2nd), Mathematics (4th), Physics (4th), Chemistry (5th), Biological Sciences (6th) and Experimental Psychology (13th).
